Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral Therapy at Oscailt
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle hands-on therapy which assists the body’s natural capacity for self repair. While being deeply relaxing, it is a subtle and profoundly healing form which helps to increase general physical vitality and well-being.
The therapy addresses the whole being, working on both physical and emotional levels. Patterns of tension, strain and resistance are encouraged to release and heal. A current problem may have its roots in earlier experience, even as far back as birth when the body can undergo significant compression and strain. These may include emotional states like anxiety or depression and physical expressions like back pain, migraine, digestive and respiratory disorders.
The treatment is usually carried out while fully clothed. Usually the client lies on a treatment table and the therapist makes contact with vantage points of the body such as the head and the sacrum at the base of the spine. Then through subtle touch with hands that are trained specifically to feel the motion of the fluids, tissues and bony structures of the body, tensions and strains are facilitated to release and unwind. At times emotional release may also occur.
The client may feel a deep sense of relaxation as well as sensations such as pulsing, heat and tingling. The body sets the pace of the work, so the client remains comfortable and able to integrate the changes which occur.
Origins of Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral therapy emerged from discoveries made about the body’s subtle physiology by osteopaths in the USA around 100 years ago. These findings show that all cells in the body express a rhythmic movement known as the Craniosacral rhythm which is fundamental to life.
At the core of the body the cerebrospinal fluid bathes and cushions the brain and spinal cord and expresses this motion in a tide-like ebb and flow; the bones, organs and other structures in the body follow this pattern of movement in different ways.
