“We are running through our lives as if we are being chased.” — Thich Nhat Hanh
We often run through our days in order to achieve a specific goal in the future. We cook so as to eat later; we work so as to earn money; we do sports so as to be fit. All activities become a means to serve an end. Everything becomes an objective that we aim towards.
By aiming our attention towards the future we lose connection with the present moment and the joy that can be had therein. Thich Nhat Hanh coined the term “aimlessness” to describe the experience of dwelling fully and happily in the here and now. If we cultivate our capacity to embrace our activities in this spirit of “aimlessness” we too can embody the insight of Thich Nhat Hanh that:
“There is no way to happiness, happiness is the way”.
Through a variety of exercises, meditations, dharma talks, looking deeply and practising together, we will touch into this joy of “aimlessness”.
