Beginners Tai Chi and Qi Gong Classes

Beginners Tai Chi and Qi Gong Classes is facilitated by Sam Lee. Classes will take place every Tuesday from 1 pm – 2.30 pm. There is a fee of €15 per class or €130 for 10 classes. For bookings please contact Sam Lee.

About Tai Chi

Tai Chi Chuan means nothing, it begins with nothing, from nothing there begins something until something happens. It is Tai Chi.

Tai means: big, just, great, grand.

Chi means: ending, beginning, top, ultimate.

Chuan means: “fisted hand”.

Originally derived from martial arts, the slow graceful movements also, in places reflect the natural movements of the animals and birds, as symbols or “pictures”, designed to focus the mind and breathing through a complex series of executions.
Although it retains its fighting applications, it’s practised for improving ones health, concentration and mind/body co-ordination.

Tai chi ring => consists of round, circular motions, the body seem to float up and down, leading to a perfect balance of body and mind.

With its precise control of breathing, tai chi increases our energy flow which leads to self healing and body regeneration.

As such Tai Chi is suitable for people of all ages.

The philosophy of Tai Chi aims to build from small to paramount, to create something out of nothingness; it concerns one plane of existence to the whole universe. It is all Tai Chi.

About Qi Gong

Qi Gong (Pronounced chee gung) is a practice that originated in China and has been rapidly gaining popularity in the West. It is essentially a moving meditation. The “Qi” in Qi Gong is the same as the “Chi” in Tai Chi. That Qi is the foundation of Chinese Medicine.

Illness is seen as a breakdown in or an inhibition of the natural functioning of Qi. Within the human being Qi is like the life force or energy which governs all aspects of our being. Everything is Qi and Qi is everything i.e. the air we breathe, the ground we walk on, the universe around us. Humans are a very concentrated form of Qi, air on the other hand is more ethereal and less condensed.

Through Qi Gong we start to become aware of the relationship between our consciousness (the self) and the Qi that gives us physical form and animates us. Through precise conscious movement we move Qi through channels in our body (often referred to as acupuncture meridians or Jing Luo) and encourage a more free and fluid flow of this energy through our body.

Energy follows intent Our intent is key in this. The very first postural alignment in Qi Gong is designed to open a connection to spirit by “raising our spirit”. This informs all subsequent actions. Therefore rather than willing energy to move we intend it to move through a harmonious relationship with our spiritual self. Don’t worry if you don’t get it straight away, through conscious practice it will happen naturally in time.

Qi Gong will be of benefit to those recovering from serious illness such as surgery, physical injury, chemotherapy, etc… or those seeking renewed vitality and health. Qi gong is suitable for all ages.

Grandmasters Lee’s education in the martial arts started at the age of 6 in Hong Kong with Wu style Tai Chi, followed by Hung Gar (Kung Fu) then Hung Sing Choy Li Fut (Buddha style, Kung Fu) . He is head of the Tai Chi /Kung Fu section of IMAC (Irish Martial Arts Commission) and has been granted 9th Dan status by the Chin Wu Traditional Martial Arts Association, China. He was granted ‘Grandmaster’ status, by the International Kenpo Karate Association. Grandmaster Lee is a level 3 coach under the Sports Councils National Development Programme and holds the advanced certificate of Sports Tutor awarded by the University of Limerick. He is particularly interested in the self healing aspects of Tai Chi and Qigong.
